Tools and Technology Note A Comparison of Methods for Estimating Northern Bobwhite Covey Detection Probabilities
نویسنده
چکیده
We compared the time-of-detection and logistic regression methods of estimating probability of detection for northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) coveys. Both methods are unusual in that they allow estimation of the total probability of detection (i.e., the product of the probability that a covey is available for detection [i.e., that a covey vocalizes] and detection given availability). The logistic regression method produced an average detection probability of 0.596 (SE 1⁄4 0.020) and the time-of-detection method produced a detection probability estimate of 0.540 (SE 1⁄4 0.086), and the 2 estimates were not significantly different. This is the first evaluation of the time-ofdetection method with empirical field data. Although the time-of-detection and logistic regression method each have advantages, both can be used under appropriate conditions to improve estimates of bobwhite abundance by allowing for the estimation of detection probabilities. Improved estimates of bobwhite abundance will allow land managers to make more informed management decisions. (JOURNAL OF WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT 72(6):1437–1442; 2008) DOI: 10.2193/2007-435

Sampling of Bobwhite Populations Estimating Sample Sizes for Distance Sampling of Autumn Northern Bobwhite Calling Coveys
Point transect sampling of calling coveys has been advocated for estimating autumn abundance of northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus; hereafter bobwhite). We conducted power analysis, over a range of expected bobwhite calling covey densities to determine levels of sampling required to obtain density estimates for calling coveys over a wide range of precision. We used distance/detection inform...
متن کاملManagement and Conservation Multi-Region Response to Conservation Buffers Targeted for Northern Bobwhite
We coordinated a large-scale evaluation of northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) population response to establishment of 9-m to 37-m linear patches (buffers) of native herbaceous vegetation along rowcrop field margins as part of the Conservation Reserve Program practice Habitat Buffers for Upland Birds (CP33). We compared northern bobwhite covey densities on 1,088 paired row-crop fields with ...
متن کاملBayesian Methods for Hierarchical Distance Sampling Models
The few distance sampling studies that use Bayesian methods typically consider only line transect sampling with a half-normal detection function. We present a Bayesian approach to analyse distance sampling data applicable to line and point transects, exact and interval distance data and any detection function possibly including covariates affecting detection probabilities. We use an integrated ...
متن کاملRecognition Characteristics in Covey Dialects of Bobwhite Quail
-Fifty Bobwhite quail (Colinus virginianus) were randomly divided into two equal-size coveys at six weeks of age. At 12 weeks the separation (“hoypoo”) call was recorded from birds in both coveys. Duration and frequency characters were measured and subjected to discriminant analysis. This analysis indicated that each covey could be segregated mainly on the difference in duration between the “ho...
متن کاملEstimating the Number of Wideband Radio Sources
In this paper, a new approach for estimating the number of wideband sources is proposed which is based on RSS or ISM algorithms. Numerical results show that the MDL-based and EIT-based proposed algorithm havea much better detection performance than that in EGM and AIC cases for small differences between the incident angles of sources. In addition, for similar conditions, RSS algorithm offers hi...
